The ‘Recently, I’ve Been A Bad Blogger’ Update

Recently, I’ve been a bad blogger. I’ve had so many things on that I’ve felt like I’m plate spinning. My daily creative play has stopped. My blogging and book reviews have stopped. But now I hope to get back to normal – whatever that is.

While I have been exceptionally busy, I have managed to listen to some new music, watch some good TV, re-watch some old films and do a bit of reading.

Musically, I’ve been enjoying Ed Sheeran’s new album X. I’m particularly fond of the first track, One. It’s sentimental and mellow. Perfect chill out music and believe me, I’ve needed to relax. I’ve had Sam Smith’s album In The Lonely Hour on repeat, appreciating the sound of his voice.

I bought Matt Fishel’s new album Cover Boy, but have to say that it was a disappointment. It was nowhere near as good as his first album Not Thinking Straight. I did like his cover of Finally, but I’m afraid that was all I liked.

I’ve watched season 2 of Under The Dome, well all but the final episode. It’s a brilliant show based on a short story by Stephen King. In Under The Dome the people of an American town are trapped under a giant dome. The plot is intricate, ever twisting and full of intrigue.

I’ve been watching the new series of Dr Who and have very mixed feelings about it. Peter Capaldi isn’t a convincing as The Doctor. Clara’s character feels a bit conflicted, not because of Mr. Pink (Danny) but because of the writing.

The Walking Dead has started again and I’m super-excited, thrilled and ecstatic during every episode. We’re only a few episodes in and it’s already my TV highlight of the week.

I’ve watched some old films like Jurassic Park 1, 2 & 3 as I love dinosaurs. In my mind, there just aren’t enough dinosaur films out there. The Adams Family 90s film has made me laugh, especially Cousin IT and thing who never fail to make me chuckle.

I’ve watched good triumph over evil through working my way through the complete collection of Harry Potter films. Mum and I are going to Harry Potter World (London) in November, so I wanted to be adequately prepared.

I got my essential hit of zombie versus kids by reading The Hunted by Charlie Higson. You can read the review I’ve wrote for The Hunted here. I felt elated reading Shopaholic to the Stars by Sophie Kinsella, which I will review soon. I’m currently reading the ridiculously funny Good Omens by legends Terry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman and the love story Us by David Nicholls.

I was organised enough to write two articles for The Gay UK. One for National Coming Out Day and The Gay UK‘s digital magazine entitled My Come Out Reactions. It’s people’s responses when I’ve come out as a gay to them. The other article I’ve just finished is 14 Reasons It’s Great To Be In A Relationship.

Barry Humphries: The Eat, Pray and Laugh Farewell Tour

Recently, my good friend Sye and I went to see a matinee performance of Barry Humphries’ Eat, Pray and Laugh show at the Opera House in Manchester.

The show kicked off with Les Patterson, Humphries’ outrageous politician character and the belly chuckles were immediate. In the Les Get Cooking sketch, Les reveals his four assistants, come dancers and backup vocals. Two gorgeous men (the other two were women) came onto the stage in tight yellow t-shirts and equally tight denim shorts and I have to admit they distracted me at times. It was a great sketch with Les and Gerard (his brother) creating continuous laughter among the audience.

The next sketch introduced the character Sandy Stone. This was probably my favourite sketch. Sandy is an old man that reflects on his life in a touching and sentimental way; yet comedy and good humour were used to pitch the sketch perfectly to the audience. This sketch was theatre at its best and brought us to the interval.

Dame Edna was on top form as she performed for the second half of the show. Laughter echoed through the audience as she arrived on the back of a jewelled elephant, before falling off onto the stage. Dame Edna was her usual warm, funny and engaging self which was a pleasure to watch. She left the audience feeling entertained and uplifted.

Throughout the show there was lots of audience participation and improvisation. Humphries’ demonstrated his extensive theatre expertise; no doubt gained through decades of experience.

The show came to an end far too quickly, with Humphries coming out as himself at the end to thunderous applause. Here are some photos from the end of the show:

Normally, I’d recommend that you buy tickets to see this superb show. However the tour is coming to an end in the UK. But if you can manage to get hold of tickets, grab them and go. You won’t regret it.

Book Review: How to Fall in Love by Cecelia Ahern

How to Fall in Love is Cecelia Ahern’s most superb love story since P.S. I Love You.

Christine is obsessed with self-help books and uses them to fix all of her problems, as well as everyone else’s. She decides to leave Barry, her husband after she realises how unhappy she is.

Christine see’s Adam on Ha’penny Bridge, Dublin about to jump. Christine, in a moment of panic makes a pact with him: give her two weeks (his 35th birthday) to help him fall back in love with life. She knows if she fails, he will be back on that bridge.

Adam is desperate, moody but loveable. Maria, his girlfriend has just slept with Sean his best friend. His father is making him take over the family company, which he doesn’t want and he recently lost his job with the Coast Guard.

Christine remains with Adam throughout the fortnight. They grow close, but will they help one another fall back in love with life? The story, told in Christine’s first-person perspective is sad, humorous and joyous.

How to Fall in Love is anything but predictable; it has twists and turns right up to the very end. It has several sub-plots that complement the main storyline. The story shows the dark and light sides of life; from depression and suicide to fun and happiness.

The characters are all loveable, even the unlikeable one. They were well developed and had real depth.

How to Fall in Love is romance at its very best. Its a one-of-a-kind story, which was an addictive page turner. I can’t heap enough praise on Cecelia Ahern for this fantastic tale.

Film Mini-Review: Despicable Me 2

Steve and I went to see Despicable Me 2 at the cinemas last weekend. Gru is back with Margo, Edith and Agnes. Gru’s life seems perfect – apart from being chaotic; but he’s missing a wife and the kids are missing a mother. Here’s the trailer:

Gru is recruited by Lucy to join the Anti-Villain League. Gru must help Lucy to identify which of the Mall Store Owners has stolen a serum. The serum is capable of turning the cute yellow minions into purple I-will-eat-anything-and-everything monsters.

The minions stole every scene with their beyond hilarious antics. It was great to sit in a crowded cinemas and hear the audience actually bellow with laughter for most of the film.

Despicable Me 2 [DVD]

was a fantastic film, one that I’d happily watch time and time again. I intend on buying the DVD as soon as it’s released on Amazon.
