Book Review: You’re The One That I Want by Giovanna Fletcher

By Books & Authors, Love & Relationships, ReviewsNo Comments
the-one-that-i-want-book-cover-giovanna-fletcher

You’re The One That I want by Giovanna Fletcher is the beautiful love triangle story of three childhood best friends.

Maddy has been best friends with Rob and Ben ever since her family moved to Peaswood when she was nine years old. Together they were an inseparable trio, calling themselves the tripod. That was until puberty hit.

You’re The One That I want starts on Maddy’s wedding day. Waiting for her at the altar is Rob, but it could have just as easily been best man Ben.

This is the dilemma: Rob and Ben both love her and Maddy loves them both back. Is Maddy marrying the right man? As butterflies flutter around in her stomach, Fletcher goes back to the start of their story and tells it tenderly.

You’re The One That I want is filled with charm and seeping in romance.

Fletcher writes in first person perspectives of Maddy, Rob & Ben and switches perspectives brilliantly. The use of first person perspectives is the best way to tell this sort of story. The first few chapters felt fictional because characters were describing meeting one another (at nine years old) and going into far more detail than most people would remember from when they were that age.

Maddy, Rob & Ben are good, likeable characters, that are well-rounded and have flaws. Through use of first person perspective and good characters Fletcher achieves an emotionally resonant connection between the characters and the reader.

The level of detail in description is perfect and Fletcher cleverly uses descriptive references that will take readers in their late twenties to early thirties back to their own childhood’s.

The plot is comfortably predictable and enjoyable. It centres around Ben’s secret love for Maddy. The relationship dilemma and love triangle will split readers, with readers finding themselves taking a side. Some readers will be Team Rob and others will be Team Ben. Personally, I was a Team Ben.

Overall You’re The One That I want is a wonderful book that will have you hooked from the first page to the last. Fletcher should be highly commended on this warm, engaging and delightful read.

Book Review: The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

By Amazon, Books & Authors, ReviewsNo Comments
the-fault-in-our-stars-john-green-book-cover The Fault In Our Stars is the outstanding novel by John Green. The book has become a worldwide bestseller and has even been made into a film.

The concept of The Fault In Our Stars is a simple one: it’s a love story between two teenagers, both of which happen to have cancer.

Hazel is a terminal cancer patient, who has been bought a few additional years of life by an experimental cancer drug. She is encouraged practically forced to attend a regular Cancer Kids Support Group by her mother who feels she should socialise more.

Into the Support Group enters love interest Augustus Waters (Gus), who is there to support his friend Isaac and is in recovery from cancer himself. He is instantly captivated by Hazel.

As Hazel and Augustus start to get to know one another and get close, a predictable plot twist means that everything turns on it’s head for Hazel.

Hazel is no longer the only the ticking time bomb, ready to explode and hurt those close to her. She is at risk of being in an explosion herself. This role reversal was simple, yet at the same time, very clever.

The Fault In Our Stars is exceptionally well written, captivates the reader from the first page and is perfectly paced. It is a superb novel.

The reader will laugh at the many funny scenes in the book, be touched by the tender scenes and be occasionally saddened at the knowledge and recognition that Hazel & Gus’ relationship will end prematurely.

Without giving any spoilers away, there’s a great and unexpected twist at the end of the book that will leave the reader feeling uplifted and believe in true love from beyond the grave.

The Fault In Our Stars is available to buy from Amazon.

I can’t wait to read another one of John Green‘s books. I will be picking up another one soon.

Book Review: How to Fall in Love by Cecelia Ahern

By Amazon, Books & Authors, ReviewsNo Comments
how-to-fall-in-love-cecelia-ahern-cover How to Fall in Love is Cecelia Ahern’s most superb love story since P.S. I Love You.

Christine is obsessed with self-help books and uses them to fix all of her problems, as well as everyone else’s. She decides to leave Barry, her husband after she realises how unhappy she is.

Christine see’s Adam on Ha’penny Bridge, Dublin about to jump. Christine, in a moment of panic makes a pact with him: give her two weeks (his 35th birthday) to help him fall back in love with life. She knows if she fails, he will be back on that bridge.

Adam is desperate, moody but loveable. Maria, his girlfriend has just slept with Sean his best friend. His father is making him take over the family company, which he doesn’t want and he recently lost his job with the Coast Guard.

Christine remains with Adam throughout the fortnight. They grow close, but will they help one another fall back in love with life? The story, told in Christine’s first-person perspective is sad, humorous and joyous.

How to Fall in Love is anything but predictable; it has twists and turns right up to the very end. It has several sub-plots that complement the main storyline. The story shows the dark and light sides of life; from depression and suicide to fun and happiness.

The characters are all loveable, even the unlikeable one. They were well developed and had real depth.

How to Fall in Love is romance at its very best. Its a one-of-a-kind story, which was an addictive page turner. I can’t heap enough praise on Cecelia Ahern for this fantastic tale.

How to Fall in Love by Cecelia Ahern is available to buy on Amazon.
