The Love of DOLLY

I’ve always thought Dolly Parton was an incredible woman. A fantastic singer, song writer, business woman and philanthropist.

Dolly had a zest for life, always being warm, bubbly and fun.

I was saddened to learn of her death, but equally thankful for the fact she lived.

Dolly accepted LGBT people and spoke positively about the LGBT community, doing so before many other people with her sort of public platform.

But Dolly became an icon to me, when she famously said:

If I hadn’t been a woman, I’d have been a Drag Queen! – Dolly Parton

In this quote, Dolly wasn’t just saying she liked and appreciated LGBT people. Dolly was also saying, that if she’d a choice, she would have proudly been part of the community.

I knew Dolly was well-liked, but what I didn’t realise, is that for many people, Dolly was and is loved by them. Since the announcement of Dolly’s death, the number of visitors to my blog post Some Facts You May Not Know About Dolly Parton has exploded.

I once watched a TV interview with Dolly, where she told an interviewer a funny story. I’m going to share this story here, told by Dolly, in her own words.

The Time Dolly Lost A Dolly Parton Look Alike Contest

Once I dressed as a Dolly, an over exaggerated Dolly in LA. I was out there working and there’s this gay bar down on Santa Monica, close to my house and they where having a Dolly Parton look alike contest.

So me and a bunch of friends decided we’d go down there, because it would be fun, because we were all dressed up and me being Dolly.

So they had these big Drag Queens, I mean, they looked great too, prettier than I could ever dream of being, but anyway, when walked across the stage, if they applauded, you won the contest by the amount of applause, I guess you got free drinks or something.

So all these beautiful guys are walking across – these Dollys – all this tall – and here I come walking across the stage and I got the least applause of anybody.

So I’ve always said: “It’s terrible when you lose a Dolly Parton look alike contest.” – Dolly Parton

I feel privileged to have shared some of my time on this planet with this wonderful woman.

Larry Dean Live at Salford Lowry: Funny, Sexy & Fabulous

Today, my good friend Simon and I went to see the funny, sexy, fabulous and proudly gay Comedian Larry Dean. We had front row seats for his energetic performance where he mostly spoke about his relationship with his grandma (who had dementia), his autism diagnosis and his partner.

Dean was performing at the Lowry in Salford Quays. Dean had the audience laughing loudly throughout his over an hour long set. My face ached from laughing so much. Dean oozed sexyness and fabulousness. I think it goes without saying, that I’m a Dean fan boy.

I had a great time and can’t wait to see Dean live again soon. Here are some photos of Simon and I taken just prior to the gig:

Last Weekend: The Fantastic, Fabulous & Funny La Cage Aux Folles and The Hilarious Despicable Me 3

On Saturday of the last weekend Simon, Chrys and I went to the matinee of La Cage Aux Folles at Liverpool Empire Theatre.

We got to Liverpool early, had lunch and a look around the shops. The weather was warm and sunny.

La Cage Aux Folles was fantastic, fabulous and funny. The cast were brilliant in their roles, the costumes glittered and gleamed, the dancing was skilled and singing spot on. In-between musical numbers various members of the cast engaged the audience with a good amount of camp comedy.

La Cage Aux Folles was so good, I would definitely and happily see it again. If you’ve never seen La Cage Aux Folles, you should go and see it. You’d love it.

Despicable Me 3 – Hilarious and laugh-out-loud.

On Sunday Steve and I went to see Despicable Me 3. Here is what it’s about:

The team who brought you Despicable Me and the biggest animated hits of 2013 and 2015, Despicable Me 2 and Minions, returns to continue the adventures of Gru, Lucy, their adorable daughters—Margo, Edith and Agnes—and the Minions. Despicable Me 3, directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda, co-directed by Eric Guillon, and written by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio, will be released in cinemas in summer 2017.

Joining Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig in Despicable Me 3 is Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award winner Trey Parker, co-creator of Comedy Central’s global phenomenon South Park and the Broadway smash The Book of Mormon. Parker voices the role of villain Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who’s grown up to become obsessed with the character he played in the ‘80s, and proves to be Gru’s most formidable nemesis to date.

Steve and I enjoyed the film. Gru’s twin brother, Dru, was endearing. Obsessed with the 80s Balthazar Bratt brought back memories of my childhood. The film has loads of hilarious scenes, the audience laughed-out-loud several times at our showing. And of course it has the loveable minions, which no Despicable Me film would be complete without.
