The Stonehenge Adventure (Part 3) – Stonehenge and Woodhenge

By Adventures, Friends & Family, Happiness & Joy, PaganismNo Comments

This is the third and final part of my adventure to see Stonehenge and other ancient sites nearby with my good friend Simon. In part 1 I blogged about Avebury Stone Circles. In part 2 I blogged about Glastonbury, The Chalice Well and the city of Wells. In this part I will blog about Stonehenge and Woodhenge.

Stonehenge is perhaps the most well known and one of the oldest stone circles in the world. It is not only a World Heritage Site but also 1 of the 7 Wonders of the World.

Stonehenge is managed by English Heritage and the on-site Visitor Centre includes an exhibition, reconstructed neolithic houses, audio guide handsets, a cafe and gift shop.

Stonehenge its self is a short bus ride away from the visitor centre and busses are provided as part of the admission price (as is access to the exhibition, access to neolithic houses and use of audio guides). The stones themselves are roped off, not allowing the thousands of visitors per day to get too close. Here are some photos:

Essential Info

  • Stonehenge is the remains of an ancient stone circle. The site includes a Visitor Centre which includes: exhibition, reconstructed neolithic houses, audio guide handsets, a cafe, toilets and gift shop.
  • Highly Recommended.
  • Opening Times: For opening times click here.
  • Admission Price: £18.20 (with gift aid) and £16.50 (without gift aid).
  • Parking: Free on-site.

Woodhenge is a series of concrete posts in the ground where the poles of wood that made up Woodhenge would have been. Simon and I both felt that the site, managed by English Heritage, was a missed opportunity to recreate Woodhenge, restoring it to its forma glory. Here are some photos of Woodhenge:

Some Plans for 2017

By Adventures, Friends & Family, Happiness & Joy, LifeNo Comments

I was ill for the first few weeks of January. At one point, I took to my bed for three days. As a result, I haven’t finished deciding on or writing up my goals and new experiences for 2017.

But I have started making plans. So far my plans include:

  • A Big Birthday Bash for Chrys. Still do most of the planning and organising for. Still to source of suitable present.
  • Finish my tour along Hadrian’s Wall (along with ancient sites of interest) with Simon. Date set. Still to plan in more detail.
  • My Birthday. Still to sort. My birthday is on a Sunday this year.
  • Kay & Alex’s Wedding. Hotel booked. Still to buy a new suit and source of suitable present.
  • An adventure to see Stonehenge, Glastonbury and Amesbury over two days with Simon. Dates set and hotel booked. Further planning needed.
  • A visit to Sheffield Botanical Gardens with Simon. Date set.
  • To see Despicable Me 3 with Steve or Neil, Rhianne & Ethan.
  • To see Sister Act with mum. I got tickets off mum for Christmas.
  • To Celebrate Samhain. Still to arrange.

Take care,

Antony

Solstice Pagans have hippie time According to the Sun News Paper

By PaganismNo Comments

Now I don’t like the Sun News Paper. And I see with an article entitled “Solstice Pagans have hippie time”. Here’s the link: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2492806/Solstice-Pagans-have-hippie-time.html.

The article starts off ok:

The ancient stone circle was awash with Druids, Pagans, healers, sun-worshippers and hippies beating drums, chanting in celebration.

“It’s the most magical place on the planet,” said antique salesman Frank Somers, 43, dressed in the robes of his Druid faith.

“Inside when you touch the stones you feel a warmth like you’re touching a tree, not a stone. There’s a genuine love, you feel called to it,” he said.
(from: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/2492806/Solstice-Pagans-have-hippie-time.html, Accessed online: 21st June 09)

However the balanced view doesn’t take long to become unbalanced, making pagan’s, druids and the like sound like a group of party-mad drugies:

…is the site of an annual night-long party …
(from: same source as above)

Police arrested about 30 people on charges including drug offenses, assault and drunk and disorderly conduct….
(from:same source as above)

I guess as The Sun didn’t report that they were ritually scaraficing children, we got off lightly. What do you think?

I would quite like to go next year and see the solstice in at Stonehenge (as I’ve never been).

Take Care,

Antony
