Tech Review: MSI Modern 15 Laptop

By Amazon, Reviews, Shopping, TechnologyNo Comments

MSI are traditionally known for making high performing gaming desktop and laptop computers. But it seems that they have now branched out into middle of the range productivity laptops, like the Modern 15, which is available to buy on Amazon.

The Modern 15 laptop was recommended to me by a friend as it has a pretty decent specification for the price, including: 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD. It also has a Backlit Keyboard keyboard and 15 inch screen, both which are must haves for me.

I’ve been using this laptop for a couple of months now and there’s just a few disappointments. The first major disappointment is the sound – the laptop is so quiet, even on maximum volume. This makes watching things or listening to music on the laptop practically impossible. The other disappointment is a minor irratation and that is the plastic of the body is very prone to showing up finger marks.

Overall it is a good laptop, but it could have been a great laptop if MSI had have sorted out the quietness of the internal speakers. I probably wouldn’t buy it again, purely because of this.

Tech Review: CHUWI 13 Inch Laptop

By Amazon, TechnologyNo Comments
CHUWI 13 Inch Laptop (1)
CHUWI 13 Inch Laptop (2)

I recently bought myself this CHUWI 13 Inch Laptop. Here are its features:

  • 13 Inch Screen
  • 12GB RAM
  • 256GB SSD
  • Wifi
  • It’s Thin & Light-weight
  • Backlit Keyboard
  • Touch Pad
  • Comes with Windows 10

Here are the Pros and Cons to help you decide if it’s the right laptop for you.

Pros

  • Great Battery Life and power-saving options.
  • It’s fast and with the 12GB RAM tasks are instantly completed.
  • It’s cheap, being only £399 on Amazon at time of this review.
  • It’s easy to set up, use and is obviously made for productivity.
  • I love the backlit keyboard, it really helps me type well in low lighting.

Cons

  • It comes with only 1 USB port.
  • There is no HDMI connection.
  • There is no Ethernet connection.
  • The charging wire is too short – being less than 2 metres.
  • The touch pad is a little stiff and not the most sensitive. This might be because it is new.

Overall it’s a great laptop for the price. Review soon,

Antony

Tech Review: WD My Passport (Yellow) 4TB Portable Hard Drive

By Amazon, Reviews, TechnologyNo Comments
Years ago, I bought an Iomega StorCenter Home Media Server.

Iomega was bought out by Lenovo whom only offered limited support for Iomega products. I updated it a few years ago and since its never been able to connect over the Wifi, only by ethernet cable.

Then recently the Server started making hard drive failure sounds. It had all of my downloaded TV series and films on. So I decided it was time to update.

Instead of opting for another media server, I went for a WD My Passport (Yellow) 4TB (photoed above and below). Here’s the My Passport features:

  • It’s Plug and Play, meaning that it doesn’t require its own power source but is instead powered through USB.
  • It’s portable.
  • It is made by Western Digital (WD) whom have an excellent reputation for making high quality hardware products.
  • It comes in various hard drive sizes: 1TB, 2TB, 3TB & 4TB.
  • It has a funky design.
  • It comes in various colours: black, white, blue, red, yellow & orange.
  • It runs silently.
  • It is relatively cheap, available on Amazon for just under a £100 for a 4TB model.
  • It has Built-in 256-bit AES Hardware Encryption meaning that you can set it so that a password is required for access. This feature cleverly allows someone to use the drive on any computer – even one that doesn’t have the WD software installed and without having to install any software.
  • Auto Backup software is installed. Or you can use other software for backups including Apple’s Time Machine.

I decided because my new drive is portable that I wanted a solid case to protect it when not in use. I found this AmazonBasics Case:

I found this great solid Amazonbasics Case for the external hard drive.

If you’re looking for an external and portable hard drive to give yourself more disk space on your laptop or PC, I can highly recommend the WD My Passport (Yellow) 4TB on Amazon.

Health Tech Review: Daylight Lamp by Beurer

By Amazon, Health, Reviews, TechnologyNo Comments
Daylight-Lamp-Beurer I had been thinking about getting a Seasonal affective Disorder (SAD) lamp for a while. Everyone I spoke to about it had friends that swore by theirs, but nobody that I knew actually had one.

So this Autumn, as evenings started to get darker earlier and there was less light in the mornings I treated myself to a Daylight Lamp by Beurer.

I have popped the daylight lamp on my desk and have used it daily, usually in the evenings after work throughout November & December. So what are my thoughts?

They are mixed. The dark mornings haven’t seemed to affect my mood as bad, but this could be the placebo effect.

Despite the Daylight Lamp box boasting that the lamp is medically certified it doesn’t reference any specific research studies to back this claim up, let alone some good longitudinal research studies.

Here are my Pros and Cons for the Daylight Lamp by Beurer:

Pros Cons
  • It appears to work. Getting up in the dark mornings hasn’t felt as difficult as in previous years. Nor has my mood seemingly been affected as much as normal by the lack of light. This could be the placebo effect, but does it really matter? As long as it works.
  • It is easy to setup and work. Simply position it, plug it in and use the one simple on/off switch on the front.
  • It is super-bright. I have nicknamed it my God Light.
  • It has a stand, so sits on my desk easily.
  • It is thin, meaning that it doesn’t take up much space.
  • It is plastic, meaning that it is easy to dust/clean.
  • It is lightweight meaning that it is easy to move. You could take it to work or other places with you.
  • The lamp made no difference to my blood sugars, which is a good thing as a type 1 diabetic.
  • It was expensive, when compared with other non-SAD lamps, costing nearly £50.
  • Replacement bulbs can only be bought from the manufacturer and not in any high street shops. I haven’t tried looking online, it’s possible that I’ll be able to get bulbs online. Hopefully they are not to expensive.
  • Switching on/off the lamp requires you to hold the back, as the product is so lightweight that trying to press the switch without holding the back results in it moving.
  • The front of the lamp does get warm/hot to the touch once it has been on a while. The manufacturer does recognise this and warms customers about it in the instructions.

Overall the Daylight Lamp by Beurer has more Pros than Cons and can be bought on Amazon.
