Getting Back To Life

By LifeNo Comments
Me – Post Hair Cut (April 2021)

With lockdown restrictions easing, it feels good to be getting back to life. Back to living rather than existing.

Seeing friends and family again, planning adventures, visiting the hair salon, all things once taken for granted, now more appreciated than ever before.

I’m off on a week of annual leave. My plans include catching up with friends and family, a visit to Conwy Castle and celebration of my 35th birthday.

It is time to make plans for the future as well. I’ve just signed up to a level 2 Counselling course.

I use counselling skills everyday at work, but haven’t got any qualifications in counselling, so I thought it was time I rectified this.

Speaking Up, Being Heard and Insulin Resistance

By HealthNo Comments

I’ve been living with type 1 diabetes for over 14 years. I’m also a Nurse. Yet sometimes I struggle to speak up and be heard when it comes to talking to health professionals about my health.

Sometimes I find myself repeating the same things only to leave with the impression that it’s my fault for not managing the diabetes well enough. This is extremely demotivating, especially when you’re trying your hardest.

But today I wanted to write about a refreshing change. For a while now I’ve been injecting enough insulin after meals to fell an elephant, yet still having high blood sugars. I’ve worked closely with a dietician to work out my carb to insulin ratios. But after injecting over 90 units of Novorapid insulin for an average carb meal, I decided I needed to get some advice from a Diabetes Specialist Nurse. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised.

The Nurse I spoke with listened. That was the key. She heard what I said and diagnosed me with insulin resistance. Insulin Resistance, it sounds like a super power doesn’t it? Unfortunately it isn’t. More a complication of being on insulin for a long time and your body getting resistant to it.

Diabetes.co.uk explain it better:

What is insulin resistance?
The role of insulin is to allow cells of the body to take in glucose to be used as fuel or stored as body fat. [282]. It also means that glucose is more likely to build up in the blood and this can lead to too high blood sugar levels. When the body becomes resistant to insulin, it tries to cope by producing more insulin. People with insulin resistance are often producing too more insulin than healthy people.

(From: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/insulin-resistance.html, Last accessed: 21/03/21.)

The symptoms of insulin resistance are:

Tick Box Bullet Point Tiredness
Tick Box Bullet Point Hunger
Unticked Box Difficulty Concentrating
Tick Box Bullet Point Weight Gain – particularly around the belly
Tick Box Bullet Point High Blood Sugars and HBA1C
Tick Box Bullet Point High Blood Pressure
Tick Box Bullet Point High Cholesterol

I’ve had every symptoms except for difficulty in concentration levels.

The Treatment
The treatment is to start Metformin. Metformin is a drug that will lower my blood sugar levels and hopefully make me less insulin resistant. I will keep you updated on how I go on.

Book Review: Neal’s Yard Remedies Essential Oils by Susan Curtis

By Amazon, Books & Authors, Nature, Reviews2 Comments

Essential Oils by Susan Curtis is an essential book to own if you’re serious about aromatherapy.

This durable hardback has 256 glossy pages of full colour with plenty of photos. It has an A-Z of essential oils, for each oil covering:

  • An introduction
  • What it is good for?
  • Best Uses
  • Methods of use (i.e. bath oil, massage oil, compress, skin care, etc.)
  • The Plant
  • The Essential Oil (how the essential oil is made)
  • A photo of the plant or herb

Then the book goes on to sections on: Base Oils, Essential Oil Recipes and Healing Remedies.

The Essential Oil Recipes includes a really useful table of common conditions and which oils are good to work with around these conditions.

This book is backed by Neal’s Yard whom are famous for their shops selling essential oils.

The only thing that was missing out of the book for me was spiritual/magical uses of essential oils. But other than that I would (and have to all of my friends) highly recommend this book.

Essential Oils by Susan Curtis is available to buy on Amazon and at all good bookshops.

5 Things I’m Looking Forward To When Lockdown Ends

By LifeNo Comments

I think it’s fair to say that although we all understand the necessity of lockdown, at the same time we’re all fed up of it. But there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is hope. Millions of people in the UK have already been vaccinated for COVID-19. The Government has a road map for easing restrictions and for allowing a return to normality.

I’ve already been lucky enough to have my first (of two) COVID-19 vaccinations.

The Back of my COVID-19 Vaccination Card,

With hope in mind, here’s a list of 5 things I’m looking forward to when lockdown finally ends:

  1. Hugs – With being single and social distancing rules, I can’t remember the last time I was hugged. It’s been a while. I’ll be glad to be able to hug family and friends once again.
  2. Getting my hair cut – Apparently my hair is beginning to resemble that of Boris Johnson’s. Next time I get it cut, I’m going super-short, just in case of future lockdowns.
  3. Getting out and about seeing people again – I miss seeing my friends. Messaging and phone calls just aren’t the same.
  4. Going out for a meal – I used to love to do lunch with friends. I can’t wait until the restaurants and pubs are back open for meals out again.
  5. No More Face Masks – I’m always forgetting my mask, they are uncomfortable and I just don’t like them. I know it’s a bit odd, me being a Nurse, but it’s the truth. I’ll be glad to say goodbye to them. I’m thinking of having fire ceremony and burning them all.
