Stephen Lynch in Manchester: A Night of Awesomeness, Laughter and Fun

By Friends & Family, Gigs & Shows, Happiness & Joy, Music & RadioNo Comments
Stephen Lynch Ticket On Thursday, my cousin Jenny and I went to see Stephen Lynch at Manchester Academy 2. We had tea out and then as we walked to the venue had several near death experiences.

Cyclists rang their bells and flashed the lights as they came towards us at a frighteningly fast pace. We jumped out of the way. Then we saw this on the floor:
Near Death Experience LOL!

Stephen Lynch Stage Yes, we were walking on the cycle lane. We hadn’t noticed as a few of the street lights were out.

We safely arrived at the venue, queued, bought drinks and then took our seats in the auditorium.

The gig started with a burlesque dancer as the warm up act. Much to the delight of the audience who showed their appreciation through wolf whistles, whooping and thunderous applause:

Next a woman came onto the stage and sang about a box of wine. Then three men came onto the stage and I thought it was another support act. But dressed in thick-framed glasses and a union jack jumper was the man himself, Steven (Photo Below: Left).

Stephen Lynch LIVE Stephen Lynch LIVE

The audience went wild with applause when they realised it was him and I think I even heard a few over-excited women scream. He had some humorous banter with the audience and fellow performers, before he got on with the show.

Stephen stripped off his jumper, undid the buttons on his black shirt to the sound of the audience whooping, whistling and applauding. He revealed red nipple tassels. I only managed to get a decent photo of him buttoning his shirt back up (Photo Above: Right). Stephen can unbutton his shirt anytime, as he’s #sexy.

Stephen Lynch LIVE One of his first songs was Queer Tattoo. Afterwards he said that he meant the old meaning of the word queer and said to his audience: “Don’t use it bad.” Which earned him a massive whoop from me.

A few songs into the show, a member of the audience was being far too rowdy and was constantly heckling Stephen. They were being blatantly disrespectful. They were annoying Stephen as well as the rest of the audience.

Stephen responded brilliantly threatening to kick them out and added: “You’re ruining it for everyone. You’ve all paid £20 to enjoy the show.” The audience was with him and showed their support with an applause. Thankfully whoever it was shut the hell up after that.

Stephen Lynch LIVE Stephen talked about his new album Lion. He explained that there’s lots of duets on it as he loves the sound of the mixed male and female vocals. He played some tracks off this album along with some classics including:

  • Craig
  • Dear Diary – Anne Frank (he also added two new: Rihanna & Steve Irwin)
  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Priest
Stephen made the audience laugh frequently. In-between laughing, I smiled throughout the show. I don’t think I’ve ever smiled throughout an entire show before. He has a truly wicked sense of humour.

It was great to hear the audience sing along in the second half, not just the classics – but some of his new songs as well.

Stephen departed the stage at the the end of the show and the audience repeatedly banged their feet, signalling their desire for an encore. The booming feet felt like an earth quake and the volume was deafening. Stephen came back for his encore and played a few of his classics such as Ugly Baby.

Stephen Lynch LIVE
Stephen Lynch LIVE The show was quite tame compared with what I had expected. There was little mention of drugs and sex. I think it was a deliberate choice.

Perhaps he was worried about the uptight british audience (we were anything but!)? Or perhaps it was about him maturing now that he has a wife and child? Who knows? But it didn’t matter as it was still a show filled to the rim with awesomeness.

If you’re a fan of Stephen Lynch or his songs, you must go and see him. He is superb live: funny, entertaining and has a fantastic voice.

Thank you Stephen and come back soon.

Film Review: Percy Jackson – Sea of Monsters

By Amazon, Friends & Family, Reviews, TV, Online Streaming & FilmsNo Comments
percy-jackson-sea-of-monsters-poster Earlier this week mum & I went to watch Percy Jackson – Sea of Monsters at the cinemas. It’s the second film in the Percy Jackson series. It starts by telling the story of Thalia, daughter of Zeus, who was attacked by a Cyclops while heading to the half-blood camp (a place for sons and daughters of the Olympian Gods & Goddesses). Rather than die she became a tree that generates a magical barrier, offering vital protection to the camp.

Percy (Logan Lerman) son of Water God Poseidon, is worried about being a one-hit wonder until tree Thalia is poisoned. The only way to save Thalia – and the camp is to get the Golden Fleece. So Percy sets out with Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) and his new Cyclops half-brother Tyson (Douglas Smith) on their quest to retrieve the Golden Fleece.

But Luke (Jake Abel) Percy’s enemy is back. Luke wants to revive Kronos to take revenge on the Olympian Gods and Goddesses who he feels have abandoned him and the rest of the half-bloods. Luke needs the Golden Fleece to revive Kronos. So Percy and Co must retrieve the Golden Fleece from a mean Cyclops, stop Luke from reviving Kronos and save Thalia. And that’s exactly what they do.

Percy’s character felt one dimensional and was overshadowed by the depth of some of the other minor characters. I couldn’t tell whether this was because of the acting or storyline. The storyline didn’t have enough tension and there was no sense of any real peril.

I watched the trailer beforehand (see below) and expected a number of water/under water scenes. There were some, but not as many as I had expected.

The CGI effects were amazing. Mum and I watched it in 2D, in 3D the effects would have been incredible – especially in the final scenes.

The film was OK and an easy watch. It entertained me and kept my attention. With more work on the basics (storyline, character depth, character interaction and directing) it could have been phenomenal. Overall it just wasn’t as fantastic as I hoped it would be.

Rivington Adventure: Ruins & The Picnic

Rivington View – Partway Up The Hill

This is the second and final part of my Rivington Adventure (see Rivington Adventure: Lever Castle), which I had while off on annual leave a few weeks ago.

It was another glorious afternoon; Simon & I headed to explore some ruins in a less well-known part of Rivington’s Woodland. We traipsed uphill, the heat from the sun making the journey more difficult.

But when we got there, it was totally worth it. I could understand why Simon had wanted me to see this magical place.

The entrance included an archway, then stairs to a doorway and felt like stepping into another world:

The ruins were presumably built by the extravagant Lord Leverhulme as a place to entertain. They include an outhouse and what would have been a small cottage. These ruins have been named by some as the Chinese Village or the Hobbit Village. Here are some photos:

As we explored, we came across this beautiful, large man-made pond. We sat down and ate our picnic admiring nature’s full summer bloom. I didn’t need to open my energy centres to feel the hum of the natural world around me. But when I did I felt bright green natural energy flow through my entire self – body, mind and soul. The energy went were healing was needed and began soothing, reviving and recharging my batteries.

I haven’t felt that blissful and alive in such a long time.

We sat on a bench and ate our picnic. As I did an ash tree seemed to call to me. I lit up a cigarette and sat with my back leant upon the tree. I closed my eyes and was transported back into the past. To a time were the pond and ruins were whole and in their former glory. I pulled myself back to the present aware that I didn’t want to go to deeply into the past with a lit cigarette in my hand. But I have to tell you that the glimpse I caught was breathtakingly beautiful.

Then Simon & I saw some ducklings with their mother duck. They were just going about their business, not bothered by us at all. So I took some photos:

Normally doing the amount of walking we I did I would have experienced some back pain afterwards. But surrounded by the elements: the earth beneath my feet, the air that I breathed, the water in the pond and the fire from the sun in the sky that warmed my skin. I left Rivington feeling interconnected with nature, healed, relaxed, rejuvenated and without any pain at all.

It did me the world of good.

A Sensational Sunset

By Friends & Family, Happiness & Joy, NatureNo Comments

One of my New Experiences for 2013 was to see the sun rise and set. A few weeks ago I did manage to see a sensational sunset. It was the first time I’d truly observed a sunset. Click on any photo in this post for a full size image.

sunset-2013-1 sunset-2013-2

At 8:30PM Simon & I parked up in a lovely spot overlooking Rivington reservoir. The sun was due to set at 9:30PM and other people were around. The sun still shone bright and I felt the heat on my skin that emanated from the sun. There was a cool breeze that carried noise from the other people: cars, car radios and chatter. I was feeling excited to experience something new and yet frustrated at the distracting noise from the other people.

sunset-2013-3 sunset-2013-4

As the time approached, most people had gone which made it quieter and I was thankful for this. Simon & I sat on a bench and even nature seemed to go quiet. The only sounds were from the rustling of the trees that swayed in the fresh breeze. The breeze it’s self felt colder than before. The daylight had dimmed in the direction opposite to the sunset. The sun released orange ambers and reds that filled the skyline and reflected off strips of clouds. Time seemed to slow down.

I felt a new appreciation for the life giving warmth and light of the sun. I felt totally relaxed and able to be truly in that moment – without any intruding thoughts. I enjoyed the beauty and magic of the sun.

sunset-2013-5 sunset-2013-6

The sun began to make it’s decent over the horizon; I noticed the moon rising on the other side. The moon’s luminescent glow grew stronger as the sunset. The transition from dark to light across the sky was phenomenal. I savoured the final rays of light feeling awe struck and enchanted. I realised that I’d taken for granted that the sun will always rise and set.

The final moments of the sun’s day go quick – it took 5 minutes to completely disappear from sight. I glanced at my watch and noticed that it was precisely on time. I took a deep breath, the transformation from day to night was complete.

sunset-2013-7

sunset-2013-8 It was a magical experience, almost spiritual; that made me fully comprehend why some people did and others still do worship the sun.

The contrast from light to dark, as the day transforms to night is magical. At one point the sun and moon even looked almost in balance.

The sun is currently rising far too early for me, but I’m hoping to see sunrise later in the year.

Take care,

Antony
